What's this? Fukagawa Hachiman Festival photos by Philbert Ono. Held in mid-August in Koto Ward, Tokyo, this is the festival's full-scale version held once every three years (1996, 1999, 2002, etc.).

Sacred Carriage Procession
Aug. 17, 1996

The Sacred Carriage's portable shrine was unloaded from the truck and put back on the carriage which was then wheeled back to the storehouse.

The happi coats these men are wearing bear a symbol of two white doves in the shape of the kanji character for "hachi" (eight), which is first kanji character of "Hachimangu," tthe shrine's name.
