What's this? Sendai Tanabata Festival photos by Philbert Ono. Held during August 6-8 in Sendai, Miyagi.

What sets Sendai's Tanabata Festival apart from the rest are the much more creative and artistic Tanabata decorations crafted meticulously. The streamer decorations at less famous Tanabata Festivals are mostly made of plastic and not hand-made. The ones in Sendai are the real thing.

According to the legend, the original date of Tanabata is July 7 according to the lunar calendar which is about a month behind the calendar we use today. Some places hold the festival on July 7 to match the original, numeric date. And other places hold it on Aug. 7 which is more accurate time-wise.

On the 5th, the night before the festival starts, there is a fireworks display. In the evenings that follow, a parade starts at 5:00 p.m. There are marching bands, floats, dancers, baton twirlers, and anything else a parade should have.
