What's this? Fukagawa Hachiman Festival photos by Philbert Ono. Held in mid-August in Koto Ward, Tokyo, this is the festival's full-scale version held once every three years (1996, 1999, 2002, etc.).

Sacred Carriage Procession
Aug. 17, 1996

Leading the procession was this convertible carrying the head priest (who kindly posed for me). They are passing in front of the Kitanoumi sumo stable. (Above the entrance, there's a wooden sign saying "Kitanoumi Beya.")

Kitanoumi was one of sumo's greatest yokozuna grand champions. Since Koto Ward is adjacent to Sumida Ward where the Ryogoku Kokugikan sumo arena is located, it has several sumo stables. The shrine also has historic ties to sumo. (More about this later.)

The rest of the procession followed while two sumo wrestlers look on from the veranda on the second floor.

The sumo wrestlers wave goodbye to the procession. Young wrestlers also participate in the festival on the last day.
