What's this? Fukagawa Hachiman Festival photos by Philbert Ono. Held in mid-August in Koto Ward, Tokyo, this is the festival's full-scale version held once every three years (1996, 1999, 2002, etc.).

Deity Transfer from Shrine to Sacred Carriage
(Horen Kojin-sai) Aug. 14, 1996

On the first day of the festival, a ceremony was held at the shrine at 5:00 p.m. to transfer the shrine deity to the sacred carriage (horen). The sacred carriage is for transporting the shrine deity on the streets. (It's now done by a gasoline-powered truck.)

Shown above is the head priest who has just removed the kami (deity) from the shrine altar. He is at the center carrying the divinity cloaked in a white sheet.

The head priest (at the front of the line) carries the divinity from the shrine to the sacred carriage. The sacred carriage is parked inside a large storehouse within the shrine grounds.
