What, then, is life as a ”half”? At times it feels twice as different and much more complicated than the life of just any old John Doe. Being Finnish-Japanese is part of our identity and we will never be able to escape it, whether we wanted or not. Living in two cultures gives one different ways of looking at things, so there are always at least two ways of seeing everything. That’s why everyone who has been brought up between two cultures should be called a ”double” rather than a ”half”, daburu rather than haafu - or nibai rather than hanbun, and that’s why the Finnish-Japanese people’s club in Finland is called Nibai.
