An invitation to the Tokyo photo community and friends!<\/p>\n
The next viewing of the Tokyo Photo Night series will be held on Wednesday,
\nFebruary 5, from 6:30 p.m. at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan in
\nYurakucho. This time TPN is pleased to be showing the work of:<\/p>\n
Shigeichi Nagano
\nA Chronicle of Japan: A Life in Photography<\/p>\n
For over fifty years veteran photographer Shigeichi Nagano has documented
\nJapan from the postwar era, to the rise of the industrial age, to the
\ndigital dependent culture of today. Along the way his style of
\nphotojournalism has provided a human portrait of a land in transition by
\ncombining both visual and narrative elements.<\/p>\n
>From an early stint in the late 1940s on the editorial staff of the Sun
\nNews Weekly in which he worked alongside Ihei Kimura, and through the early
\n1950s as a staff photographer for the Iwanami Library of Photography,
\nNagano traveled all over Japan documenting the changing times of his
\ncountry. In 1954 he turned freelance and in the decades to follow earned a
\nreputation as one of Japan’s top photojournalists, producing photo essays
\nand documentary films.<\/p>\n
To this day Nagano remains actively involved in photography at the age of
\n77. He is the recipient of numerous awards including: Camera Arts Award and
\nArtist Award, Japan Photo Critics Association, 1960; Ina Nobuo Award, 1986;
\nAward of the Year, Photographic Society of Japan, 1991; Award of the Year,
\nPhotographic Society of Japan, 1995. His works are held in the permanent
\ncollections of Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, the George Eastman
\nHouse and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. He has also published numerous
\nbooks including: Japan’s Dream Age, 1978; A Chronicle of Japan, 2000; and
\nDistant Gaze, 2001.<\/p>\n
This event is open to the public, you do not have to be a member of the
\nFCCJ to attend.<\/p>\n
