What's this? Fukagawa Hachiman Festival photos by Philbert Ono. Held in mid-August in Koto Ward, Tokyo, this is the festival's full-scale version held once every three years (1996, 1999, 2002, etc.).

Joint Procession of Portable Shrines
Aug. 18, 1996

The portable shrine gets a final mid-air toss while passing by Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine. This method of carrying the portable shrine is called "mai-age" or tossing up. The shrine's torii can be seen on the right.

The festival ends when all the portable shrines reach this point and pay their respects to the shrine in this way. Then they return to their respective parishes.
