What's this? Fukagawa Hachiman Festival photos by Philbert Ono. Held in mid-August in Koto Ward, Tokyo, this is the festival's full-scale version held once every three years (1996, 1999, 2002, etc.).

Sacred Carriage Procession
Aug. 17, 1996

The Sacred Carriage Procession crossing Kiyosu-bashi Bridge over Sumida River. The shrine's head priest is sitting on the convertible. This bridge is also part of the route for the portable shrine parade to be held the next day to climax the festival.

The truck carrying the shrine maidens cross Kiyosu-bashi Bridge. On the truck's side panel at the center is a phoenix.
