Teruha with chrysanthemum

::

The flower she's holding matches her kimono design that shows the same flower. Her name was Teruha and she appeared in many postcards. She was born in 1896 in Osaka and worked as a geisha in Shimbashi, Tokyo before becoming a Buddhist priest in Kyoto. Read more about her interesting life by James A. Gatlin at geikogallery.com.

Thank you for the wonderful link and mention of my site, The Geiko Gallery. Teruha is a very special woman, and is near and dear to the hearts of many postcard fans throughout the world. I was very pleased to find her story, and I am very glad that people can now learn more about this remarkable woman. Thank you again!

It is with great sadness to report that James Gatlin died of a heart attack in Jan. 2003. This was announced at his personal photography site at http://www.jagatlin.com/. I only met him online and never in person. Condolences to his wife and children.
