Next Tokyo Photo Night

An invitation to the Tokyo photo community and friends!

Date: Monday, July 5, 2004 (7:30 p.m.)

Tokyo Photo Night is a community slide show event that features top photographic talent from Japan and abroad. The next showing will feature:

Philip Jones Griffiths (Magnum Photos):
“A Dark Odyssey”

Born in Rhuddlan, Wales, Jones Griffiths began his career as a stringer for the Manchester Guardian while studying pharmacy in Liverpool. In 1961 he became a full time freelancer for the London Observer, and in the following year covered the Algerian War based out of Central Africa. From there he moved onto Asia where he photographed Vietnam from 1966 to 1968, and again in 1970. In 1971 he published the book Vietnam Inc. which sold out in a few weeks. This was instrumental in bringing about public awareness against the Vietnam War.

In 1967 Jones Griffiths joined the legendary photo agency Magnum, becoming a full member in 1971. In 1973 he photographed the Yom Kippur War, then Cambodia from 1973-75. In 1977 he based himself out of Thailand enabling him to cover all of Asia. From 1980, Griffiths moved to New York and became president of Magnum, a title he held for five years.

A master of the documentary, his photographs have appeared in every major magazine the world over. His stories, often self assigned have taken him to over 120 countries with more recent projects including; the effects of Agent Orange in Vietnam, Arsenic Water poisoning of Fallon, Nevada, and anti-war sentiment against the US Iraq War. He is also a filmmaker and has completed documentaries for the BBC. His most recent book “Dark Odyssey”, published by Aperture, features a lifetime of work that clearly illustrates his concern for humanity. Griffiths will be showing photographs from this book as well works from other recent projects.

I hope you can attend!
